ASSESSMENT

Timely assessment of infant and child feeding needs are crucial Families may be breast/chestfeeding, pumping and feeding their own milk, supplementing with donor milk or formula. Parents may be pumping their milk and bottle or cup feeding, If the child is over 6 months in age, they will also need solid food.

  • Parents who are breast/chest feeding may need PRIVACY and Quiet.

  • Parents who are pumping (pump-dependent) may need: PRIVACY, CLEANING SUPPLIES/PlACE, ELECTRICITY, PUMP or PUMP Parts, REFRIGERATION./FREEZER, BOTTLES/CUPS

  • Parents who are feeding donor milk may need: BOTTLES/CUPS, CLEANING SUPPLIES/PLACE, REFRIGERATION/FREEZER

  • Parents who are formula or mixed feeding may need: Formula, BOTTLES/CUPS, CLEANING SUPPLIES/PLACE, FORMULA PREPARATION SPACE WITH BOILED WATER, REFRIGERATION/FREEZER, READY TO FEED Formula is far superior in disaster/emergency situations to reduce the risk of infection.

  • Parents who are feeding solids may need: solid foods of the texture they are used to feeding, clean cups and utensils, bibs

If pump-dependent parents do not have a pump, electricity, or cleaning supples/place, they must be taught HAND-EXPRESSION and cup feeding. If milk is not removed, then the parent can become ill and milk supply can be lost completely very quickly. See hand-expression and cup feeding videos here.

Cleaning is crucial for pump-dependent, donor milk/formula feeding, and children fed with bottles. CUPS ARE MUCH EASIER TO CLEAN and SAFER in emergency situations with crowded conditions and limited access to clean water. SEE CUP FEEDING HERE.

If a pumping parent needs to feed a child from the breast/chest, but the infant refuses, try DRIP DROP FEEDING.

Formula preparation can be compromised in disaster/emergency situations. READY TO FEED Formula is recommended.

DO: HELP Lactating Parents find the privacy and support they need

DON’T: OFFER Formula to lactating parents if they are not already using it as a substantial part of their child’s diet. FORMULA is less safe than human milk especially in an emergency/disaster situation. YOU could be compromising the health and safety of the parent and child.
